ISTanbul straddles Europe and Asia at roughly 41°N latitude, giving it dramatic seasonal swings in daylight. This page explains how Turkey Time (TRT) interacts with the sun’s apparent motion and when to catch the best light. For the current time in Istanbul, visit the live clock.
How TRT Affects Solar Time in Istanbul
Istanbul uses Turkey Time (TRT), UTC+3 year‑round. Unlike many countries, Turkey abolished Daylight Saving Time in 2016, so the clock does not shift. This means the relationship between clock time and solar time is nearly constant, but Istanbul’s longitude (29°E) places it about 1 hour and 56 minutes ahead of its mean solar time. Consequently, the sun reaches its zenith (solar noon) around 13:00–13:15 TRT throughout the year, and sunsets occur later than the clock suggests. For a deeper dive into the time zone history, see the DST in Istanbul page.
Spring (March – May)
Spring is a season of rapidly lengthening days. The vernal equinox (around March 20) brings nearly equal day and night, and by late May the sun rises before 05:30 and sets after 20:20. Golden hour (the hour after sunrise and before sunset) is especially soft because of the low sun angle. For planning calls or meetings, check the Business Hours guide.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Day Length | Civil Twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mar 20 (Equinox) | 07:05 | 19:12 | 12h 07m | 06:38 – 19:39 |
| Apr 30 | 06:00 | 20:00 | 14h 00m | 05:30 – 20:30 |
| May 31 | 05:32 | 20:28 | 14h 56m | 05:00 – 21:00 |
For photographers, the “blue hour” (just before sunrise and after sunset) in spring lasts about 30 minutes. From mid‑April the sky stays bright long after sunset due to the twilight
Summer (June – August)
Summer solstice around June 21 brings the longest day of the year. The sun rises before 05:30 and sets after 20:40, giving over 15 hours of daylight. Civil twilight lasts until nearly 21:15, offering extended evening activities. Note that TRT pushes the solar noon later, so the hottest part of the day is mid‑afternoon.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Day Length | Civil Twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 21 (Solstice) | 05:32 | 20:43 | 15h 11m | 04:59 – 21:16 |
| Jul 31 | 05:56 | 20:20 | 14h 24m | 05:25 – 20:51 |
| Aug 31 | 06:27 | 19:39 | 13h 12m | 05:59 – 20:07 |
Golden hour in summer is brief but intense; the sun sets quickly near the horizon. For the best photos, aim for 30 minutes after sunrise or 30 minutes before sunset.
Autumn (September – November)
After the autumn equinox (around September 22) days shorten quickly. By late November the sun rises after 07:00 and sets before 17:30. The low sun angle creates long shadows and warm tones, making it a favorite season for photographers.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Day Length | Civil Twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 22 (Equinox) | 06:50 | 19:00 | 12h 10m | 06:22 – 19:28 |
| Oct 31 | 07:33 | 17:57 | 10h 24m | 07:04 – 18:26 |
| Nov 30 | 08:08 | 17:36 | 9h 28m | 07:38 – 18:06 |
The transition from TRT to solar time becomes noticeable: solar noon occurs around 12:50, so the midday sun appears lower than in summer.
Winter (December – February)
The winter solstice around December 21 is the shortest day, with less than 9 hours of daylight. Sunrise after 08:15 and sunset before 17:40. Despite the short days, Istanbul’s southern latitude still offers a decent amount of light; the sun never gets extremely low.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Day Length | Civil Twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dec 21 (Solstice) | 08:24 | 17:40 | 9h 16m | 07:53 – 18:11 |
| Jan 31 | 08:14 | 18:13 | 9h 59m | 07:44 – 18:43 |
| Feb 28 | 07:37 | 18:48 | 11h 11m | 07:10 – 19:15 |
Winter golden hour can last over an hour because of the shallow sun path. It’s an excellent time for cityscape and silhouette shots.
Practical Tips: Golden Hour & Photography
The “golden hour” (the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset) provides warm, diffused light ideal for photography. In Istanbul, the exact times shift throughout the year, but as a rule, check the tables above and aim for those windows. The “blue hour” (20–30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset) offers cool tones. Since TRT stays constant, you can easily plan shoots using the clock times in the tables.
