Current time in Turkey

Every clock in the country reads the same. Turkey runs on Turkey Time (TRT), fixed at UTC+3, from Edirne to Kars. No seasonal shifts, no second zone.

One time zone for the whole country

One clock. 82,319,724 people share it.

  • Ankara is the capital.
  • Istanbul is the largest city, population 15,701,602.
  • Izmir, Antalya, Bursa, Adana, Gaziantep: all identical time.

Neighbouring Russia spans 11 time zones. The United States has six. Turkey has one.

Turkey Time (TRT) = UTC+3 year-round

Turkey does not observe daylight saving time. The country permanently uses what was formerly its summer offset.

  • IANA time zone: Europe/Istanbul
  • Offset: UTC+3, no seasonal change
  • Status: No DST in 2026 or 2027 under current law

The change happened in September 2016. Government Decree No. 6711 abolished the biannual clock shift. Clocks stayed on UTC+3 that autumn and have not moved since.

Why the gap to Europe shrinks in summer

Turkey never changes its clocks. Europe does. That makes the time difference a moving target.

City pair January difference July difference
Istanbul ↔ New York 8 hours behind 7 hours behind
Istanbul ↔ London 3 hours behind 2 hours behind
Istanbul ↔ Paris 2 hours behind 1 hour behind
Istanbul ↔ Dubai 1 hour ahead 1 hour ahead
Istanbul ↔ Sydney 8 hours ahead 7 hours ahead

In January, New York sits on EST (UTC-5). By July, it shifts to EDT (UTC-4). Turkey stays locked at UTC+3, so the gap narrows by one hour.

How Turkey's time compares to neighbours

Country Time zone DST? Difference from TRT
Greece (west) EET (UTC+2) / EEST (UTC+3) Yes 0h in summer, 1h behind in winter
Bulgaria (northwest) EET / EEST Yes 0h in summer, 1h behind in winter
Syria (southeast) UTC+3 No 0h year-round
Iran (east) UTC+3:30 No 0.5h behind year-round
Russia (Moscow, northeast) MSK (UTC+3) No 0h year-round

Turkey matches its eastern neighbours (Syria, Russia) year-round. With Greece and Bulgaria, the difference vanishes in summer but reappears in winter when those countries fall back to UTC+2.

Time in Turkey vs Europe

For most of the year, Turkey is 1 to 2 hours ahead of Western Europe.

  • When London is on GMT (winter), Turkey is 3 hours ahead.
  • When London is on BST (summer), Turkey is 2 hours ahead.
  • When Paris is on CET (winter), Turkey is 2 hours ahead.
  • When Paris is on CEST (summer), Turkey is 1 hour ahead.

The one-hour swing happens because Europe changes its clocks and Turkey does not.

Time in Turkey vs the Middle East

Turkey shares its offset with most of the Arabian Peninsula.

  • Saudi Arabia: UTC+3 year-round. Same time.
  • Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Yemen: UTC+3. Same time.
  • United Arab Emirates (Dubai): UTC+4. One hour ahead.
  • Iran: UTC+3:30. 30 minutes ahead.
