Istanbul does not change its clocks. Not in spring, not in autumn, not since September 2016. The city sits at UTC+3 every day of the year. The shifting gap you see when converting to New York or London has nothing to do with Istanbul. It is the other city moving.
TRT (Turkey Time) is UTC+3, 365 days a year. Every city that observes DST will show a different gap depending on the date. A one-click converter matters because the number you memorised last winter may be wrong today.
How many hours behind is Istanbul from New York?
The table below shows the time gap from Istanbul (TRT, UTC+3) on two specific dates in 2026: 15 January and 15 July. Cities that observe DST are in bold.
| City | Offset from Istanbul (15 Jan 2026) | Offset from Istanbul (15 July 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 8 hours behind | 7 hours behind |
| Los Angeles | 11 hours behind | 10 hours behind |
| London | 3 hours behind | 2 hours behind |
| Paris | 2 hours behind | 1 hour behind |
| Dubai | 1 hour ahead | 1 hour ahead |
| Mumbai | 2.5 hours ahead | 2.5 hours ahead |
| Singapore | 5 hours ahead | 5 hours ahead |
| Tokyo | 6 hours ahead | 6 hours ahead |
| Sydney | 8 hours ahead | 7 hours ahead |
| Johannesburg | 1 hour behind | 1 hour behind |
| São Paulo | 6 hours behind | 6 hours behind |
| Chicago | 9 hours behind | 8 hours behind |
Cities that never change (Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Tokyo, Johannesburg) keep a constant gap. Cities that observe DST shift by exactly one hour between the two dates. São Paulo sits in the Southern Hemisphere. On 15 January it is on daylight time; on 15 July it is on standard time. The gap stays at 6 hours on both dates because Istanbul's fixed offset and São Paulo's seasonal offset happen to cancel the shift for those two specific dates. Pick a date in October or November and the gap will differ.
How the converters work
Each city page gives you:
- The current time in that city versus Istanbul right now.
- A live hour-by-hour comparison table for any day you pick.
- The exact DST status of the other city for your chosen date.
Pick the date you care about. A meeting on 20 March 2026 will have a different gap than one on 21 June. The converter handles that automatically.
What is TRT time?
TRT is Turkey Time, fixed at UTC+3 since September 2016. Before that, Turkey used UTC+2 in winter (Eastern European Time) and UTC+3 in summer. Government Decree No. 6711 abolished the switch. Clocks have not changed since.
What this means for you:
- Converting from a city in the European Union: the gap shrinks by one hour when Europe goes to summer time (last Sunday in March) and grows back when Europe returns to winter time (last Sunday in October).
- Converting from a US or Canada city: the gap shrinks by one hour when the US moves to daylight time (second Sunday in March) and grows back when the US returns to standard time (first Sunday in November).
- Converting from Australia: the gap can change by one hour in the opposite direction because Australian summer is Northern Hemisphere winter.
- Converting from a city that never observes DST (Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Tokyo, Johannesburg): the gap is always the same.
Why does the Istanbul time difference change with London?
Istanbul's offset has no transitions. The entire shift is caused by the other city.
London: 3 hours behind Istanbul on 15 January (London on GMT, UTC+0). On 15 July, London is on BST (UTC+1), so only 2 hours behind. Istanbul never moved.
Sydney: 8 hours ahead of Istanbul on 15 January (Sydney on AEDT, UTC+11). On 15 July, Sydney is on AEST (UTC+10), so 7 hours ahead. Istanbul never moved.
If you schedule a recurring call between Istanbul and a DST-observing city, check the date twice a year. The converter pages for each city pair show exactly when the shift happens.

Does Istanbul ever change its clocks?
No. Turkey abolished DST in 2016. TRT is UTC+3 year-round. No planned changes exist.
Why is the gap different in summer and winter?
Because the other city changes its clocks, not Istanbul. Converting to a city that observes DST means the gap shifts by one hour on the dates that city changes.
What is the IANA time zone for Istanbul?
Europe/Istanbul. Operating systems, programming libraries and calendar apps all use this identifier.
Is Istanbul always 1 hour behind Dubai?
Yes. Dubai is on Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4). Neither city observes DST. The gap is always exactly 1 hour.
How do I find the best time to call Istanbul?
Use the Best Time to Call Istanbul page. It shows overlap windows for every major region based on typical business hours.
Who should recheck the gap most often?
Anyone scheduling recurring meetings between Istanbul and a city that observes DST, especially in the US, Canada, Europe or Australia. The rule of thumb ("Istanbul is X hours ahead") is only correct for half the year. Check the converter for your specific date.
